Two provinces, one roadmap, eight parties, one mission
Europe's first commercial molten salt reactor is taking shape π³π±
Eight parties have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to advance THORIZONβs full roadmap πThe PILOT non-nuclear program is expanding in Zeeland πThe PIONEER nuclear demonstrator will be built at NRG PALLAS in Noord-Holland πThorizon One, Europeβs first commercial molten salt reactor, is targeting Zeeland as its home.
π¬ NRG PALLAS, the leading Dutch nuclear research institute and THORIZONβs founding home, will provide the site and intends to become owner, licensee and operator of the PIONEER demonstrator. Rooted at the Energy & Health Campus in Petten, alongside decades of molten salt research, this is the right foundation.
β‘EPZ, which has operated the Borssele nuclear site for over 50 years, has completed a pre-feasibility assessment validating the suitability of the site and has joined this coalition to investigate becoming the owner, licensee and operator of Thorizon One with Zeeland as target location.
ποΈ Both Provincie Zeeland and Provincie Noord-Holland are committed to supporting permitting and licensing and to actively engaging stakeholders in their regions. Impuls Zeeland and ROM InWest alongside Invest-NL, intend to financially back THORIZON in this next and decisive phase of development.
πͺπΊ π«π· π³π± THORIZON is a Franco-Dutch company by design. France brings fuel cycle mastery and nuclear engineering depth through partners including CEA and Orano. The Netherlands brings high-tech manufacturing and a growing innovation ecosystem. Together we are building a sovereign European value chain for advanced nuclear that no single country could build alone. THORIZON is one of eight prioritized projects in the EU Industrial Alliance on SMRs.
πΊοΈ Full roadmap: 2027 - PILOT program and non-nuclear molten salt test facilities in Provincie Zeeland and Provincie Noord-Brabant 2028 - Construction of PIONEER nuclear demonstrator at NRG PALLAS in Provincie Noord-Holland 2034 - Thorizon One 100MWe of carbon-free electricity on the European grid, delivering 100 MWe and industrial heat in Provincie Zeeland
We thank all partners for their partnership, drive and commitment to building next-generation nuclear
